The New MCSD Certifications – Getting Started With Study Materials

As you might already be aware, the old Microsoft Certified Professional Developer (MCPD) certifications are being retired and are being replaced with Microsoft Certified Solutions Developer (MCSD). My intention is to ideally obtain all 3 of the new MCSD certifications.

Today, I started. I started by gathering some information. Here’s what I found for resources for each:

MCSD: Windows Store Apps (I’m going the C# route, not HTML5/JavaScript):
First, here are the exams. The links go to the MS page for the exam, which has links to study materials (if available), which is useful.

  • 70-483 – Programming in C#
  • 70-484 – Essentials of Developing Windows Store Apps Using C#
  • 70-485 – Advanced Windows Store App Development Using C#

There are self-study guide (books) for 70-483 and 70-484, but those are on pre-order for JULY 2013. I haven’t found any books for 70-485. The only other source of study material I found was some videos on PluralSight:

MCSD: Web Applications:
Here are the exams:

  • 70-480 – Programming in HTML5 with JavaScript and CSS3
  • 70-486 – Developing ASP.NET MVC 4 Web Applications
  • 70-487 – Developing Windows Azure and Web Services

There are self-study guide (books) for all three (70-480, 70-486, 70-487), but they are on pre-order for AUGUST 2013.

I didn’t find much on ASP.NET 4.5 on PluralSight (as of this writing). However, is a whole category and 13 courses on PluralSight just about Windows Azure.

Also, there are some useful sessions on Microsoft Virtual Academy:

MCSD: Application Lifecycle Management:
Here are the exams:

  • 70-496 – Administering Microsoft Visual Studio Team Foundation Server 2012
  • 70-497 – Software Testing with Visual Studio 2012
  • 70-498 – Delivering Continuous Value with Visual Studio 2012 Application Lifecycle Management

There are no self-study guide (books) for this. I didn’t find anything on Microsoft Virtual Academy either.

However, there are a few courses on PluralSight that look promising:

Now, that’s a lot of stuff to go through. How do you organize all of this? I’m leveraging some good (free) tools and trying to use Kanban. More on that in the next post…

Thank you so much for this article, I am interested in going down the path of self-studying and found your links to the books on Amazon helpful.
