Some key points:
1 petabyte of data (that’s 1,024 terabytes, or 1,048,576 gigabytes!)
827 billion rows… billion. And not just a couple of billion, it’s getting close to trillion! Wow.
4.4 million concurrent users at peak time
330,000 new users each day
That’s just…. Staggering!! All running Microsoft OS’s and software too… What an “adorable” technology! :o) By the way, when I first started at my job (which is primarily a Java and mainframe shop), I was on a conference call and an architect said something like: ".NET is adorable, but if you want to do ‘real’ development, then you use Java". Can you even imagine an application this big, scaling on the Java platform? I can’t.
And also, if you’ve never read it, you gotta read this original case study about MySpace from a couple of years ago, this is a classic!!:
MySpace was growing so fast, and they had so much traffic – that they were triggering the OS to think there was a denial-of-service attack!! Haha good times…
