web.config mail settings don’t support SSL/TLS

After digging around for a bit, I found this:
I had this exact problem. Using the SQL membership provider and the ForgotPassword control, I would get an error that the settings in the web.config weren’t set – something like:

  <system.net>

    <mailSettings>

      <smtp deliveryMethod="Network" from="someemail@gmail.com">

        <network host="smtp.gmail.com" userName="someemail@gmail.com" password="somepassword" port="587"/>

      </smtp>

    </mailSettings>

  </system.net>

but then I got an error that this mailhost needs a secure connection, but there is no way to specify that in the web.config. So the link above describes the bug in detail and a workaround.
